Laminate floor: how to lay it yourself?

Using laminate panels is a good way to refresh the interior of any house or apartment. Although it may seem a demanding task, with proper preparation and tools you can successfully do it on your own. Below, you will find out how to ensure that the laminated floor is installed properly to serve for many years.

Materials and tools: what you need

In addition to panels, you will need items and tools such as:

  • Underlay
  • Saw (manual or electric)
  • Hammer
  • Wedges
  • Panel installation kit (optional)
  • Measure
  • Pencil
  • Level

Step 1: Appropriate preparation of the floor

Floor cleaning: make sure that the floor is clean, dry and even. Remove any impurities, nails or screws sticking out of the floor.

Levelling out: If the floor is uneven, it should be levelled out with self-levelling mass.

Panel acclimatization: leave the panels in the room where the laminate floor will be laid for about 48 hours before installation to adapt them to the environment.

Step 2: Laying the underlay

Spread the underlay to ensure acoustic insulation and compensate for unevenness.

Step 3: Start of laying laminate floors

First row: start at the corner of the room. Use wedges to maintain the distance between the wall and the panels (approx. 8-10 mm), which provide room for panel expansion.

Cutting panels: cut laminate panels so that they fit the dimensions of the room. Remember to keep the space at the walls.

Step 4: Laying next rows

Connecting panels: connect laminate panels, starting with the shorter side. Make sure that they are well connected and there are no gaps between them.

Staggered offset: check that the staggered offset of the panels in subsequent rows is at least 30 cm, which will increase the stability of the laminate floor.

Step 5: Laying the last row

Adjusting the last row: the last row will probably require cutting lengthwise to fit the rest of the space. Remember to keep the appropriate distance from the wall.

Step 6: Laminate floor — finish

Installation of skirting boards: install skirting boards to hide the spacing between the panels and the wall.

Cleaning: remove all wedges and clean.

Laminate floor requires good preparation and proper care, but it is possible to lay it on your own. Remember to carefully read the instruction of the panel manufacturer before starting the project. Working with accuracy and patience allows you to avoid mistakes. Good quality tools also contribute to the desired end result.
